Having gone the 60 miles from Williams to the Grand Canyon by bike, I could enjoy the sunset over the Grand Canyon in the evening. I hadn’t thought, it would be spectacular, standing at the rim as you wouldn’t feel the dimension of the canyon, but it is quite fascinating, breathtaking and gigantic and definitly worth to visit.
Thursday started with a delicious breakfast with two danish couples on the campsite. Excited and with new energie I started to the edge of the canyon and there followed the ‘Rim trail’; a hiking path close to the rim, which offers different views over the canyon. Late in the afternoon I met Mike and Evan in the park; two guys, who also travel by bike and currently cross the US from the east to the west. I told them about my plan, spending the night directly at the rim of the canyon and there was no need for convincing to let them join me. No sooner said than done. After having a cold beer, dinner and watching the sunset, we placed the sleeping pads and slept as close as possible to the canyon. The starry sky was unbelievable and the moon was light enough to still see the texture of the canyon. In the morning the sunrise was admired and we decided to make a hike into the canyon. That was also a worthy experience as you have a completely different view in/ out of the canyon. All the impressions of the two days there were rouded by a very interesting documentation, they show in the Visitor Center and a last beer in the sunset at the rim of the canyon.

Nach den 60 Milen von Williams zum Grand Canyon, konnte ich abends noch den Sonnenuntergang am Grand Canyon genießen. Ich dachte es sei nicht so spektakulär an der Kante zu stehen, weil man sich der Größe des Canyons vielleicht nicht so bewusst wird, aber er ist durchaus fasziniernend, atemberaubend und riesig und definitiv einen Besuch Wert. Donnerstag wurde mit einem leckeren Frühstück mit zwei dänischen Pärchen auf dem Campingplatz begonnen. Gestärkt und aufgeregt ging es danach wieder zur Kante des Canyons, wo ich den ´Rim trail´ entlang gegangen bin, der einem unterschiedliche Aussichten, immer dicht an der Kante entlang, vom Canyon bietet. Am späten Nachmittag hatte ich Mike und Evan im Park getroffen, die ebenfalls mit dem Rad unterwegs sind und gerade die USA von Osten nach Westen durchqueren. Ich habe ihnen von meinem Plan, mit Isomatte und Schlafsack direkt an der Kante vom Grand Canyon zu übernachten erzählt und ich musste keine Überzeugungskünste leisten, damit sie mitkommen. Also gesagt, getan. Nach einem kalten Bier, Dinner und dem Sonnenuntergang am Canyon haben wir die Isomatten ausgebreitet und so nah am Canyon geschlafen, wie es nur geht. Der Sternenhimmel war unglaublich und durch den Mond konnte man trotz Dunkelheit immer noch den Canyon sehen. Am Morgen wurde der Sonnenaufgang bestaunt und wir beschlossen eine kleine Wanderung etwas in den Canyon hinein zu machen. Es war ebenfalls eine coole Erfahrung, da man noch mal eine völlig andere Sicht in/ aus dem Canyon hatte. Die ganzen Eindrücke dieser zwei Tage am Grand Canyon wurden durch einen sehr interessanten Film, den sie im Visitor Center zeigen, einem letzten Bier und dem Sonnenuntergang an der Kante des Grand Canyons abgerundet.
