Hello Carretera Austral! On Feburary 10th we started with 5 of us. A french couple, we´ve met before in El Chalten joined us cause they started on the same day going north. It was a beautiful first day, a lot of going up and downhill, but al least it was sunny and really impressive. The following day was hard. There were a lot of steep hills and we mostly needed to go uphill. The road was bad, gravel raod as every day, we had headwind und a lot of rain. It wasn´t very motivating especially when you can´t really see anything of the landscape cause of clouds and rain. The next day we only continued with the three of us, Gabriel, Myriam and me. The French couple got a ride to the next town in the morning cause they needed to fix one of their back racks. It was still raining a lot and nothing dried over night. So we were happy that there was a truck stopping and the three bikes and all the bags fit on the back. We got a ride to the crossing to Tortel:) The last 24km to Tortel we traveled by bike again. Tortel is located at kind of a hillside. You can only reach it by walking cause the houses are connected by wooden decks and stairs. The car you have to park in a parking lot on the top. We had a few hours of sun after we arrived.

After we could dry everything in a hostel overnight we unfortunately continued again in the rain the next day. It´s good that there are some old cabins on the side of the road you can use as a shelter over night. Since we started in Tortel we have a new companion, Bernard from the Netherlands. Myriam and Gabriel have met him before on the road.

Yesterday we arrived in Cochrane. Today we´re going to spend the day to do some grocery shopping, to get the laundry done and of course to get in touch with the family.

Hallo Carretera Austral! Am 10.2. ging es los, zu fünft, denn ein französisches Pärchen, dass wir schon in El Chalten getroffen hatten, ist auch am selben Tag aufgebrochen. Wunderschöner erster Tag, viel auf und ab, aber sonnig und beeindruckend. Der darauf folgende Tag war dagegen anstrengend und kräftezehrend: Steile Berge, viele steile lange Ansteige, Schotter, Gegenwind und Regen. Das alles war nicht gerade motivierend, zumal man von der Landschaft nicht wirklich viel sehen konnte. Am nächsten Tag ging es zu dritt weiter, da das französische Pärchen früh morgens ein Truck anhalten konnte, der sie mitnimmt, damit sie den gebrochenen Gepäckträger in der nächsten Stadt reparieren/ersetzen können. Da es immer noch in Strömen regnete und nichts über Nacht wirklich getrocknet ist, waren wir nicht traurig, als wir ebenfalls eher zufällig einen Truck anhalten konnten. Wir haben es irgendwie geschafft, alle drei Fahrräder und alle Taschen auf der Ladefläche zu verstauen und konnten bis zur Abzweigung Richtung Tortel mitgenommen zu werden. Der Abstecher (24km) nach Tortel wurden dann wieder per Fahrrad zurückgelegt. Tortel ist ein kleiner am Hang gelegener Ort. Man kann ihn direkt nur zu Fuß erreichen, da die Häuser mit Holzstegen und Holztreppen verbunden sind. Oberhalb gibt es einen Parkplatz, auf dem das Auto abgestellt werden kann. Mit den paar Stunden Sonne, die wir am Abend hatten, war es echt ein schönes Plätzchen.

Nachdem wir im Hostel in Tortel alles trocknen konnten, ging es den nächsten Tag dennoch im Regen weiter. Zum Glück gibt es hier und da etwas abseits der Straße gelegen einen alte Schuppen, der perfekt ist um Unterschlupf für die Nacht zu finden. Seit Tortel begleitet uns Bernard aus Holland, den Myriam und Gabriel schon vorher mal getroffen hatten. Gestern sind wir in Cochrane angekommen und nutzen den Tag heute, um Einkäufe zu machen, Wäsche zu waschen und natürlich, um sich bei der Familie zu melden.
