In Chaiten I needed to make a decision. 10 days were left until my airplane will leave from Santiago. So there were three Options. First: taking the ferry straight to Puerto Montt. Second: trying to make it to Puerto Montt by bike. Third: trying to hitchhike north for a bit to safe time so that I could also visit the area around Lago Llanquihue. The area is supposed to be really nice especially with a bike.
So I decided to do the last option. I got up really early in the morning to get my stuff packed and to wait for a car at 6:30 a.m. There were hardly any cars on this road so I just hoped that there is at least one car going north which can take me and my bike. And again…it worked out perfectly. A few minutes past 7 two guys from Coyhaique picked me up and we managed to get on the first ferry. On the last part of the Carretera Austral from Chaiten to Puerto Montt you need to take three ferries. Two of them are short ones around half an hour and one takes you 3,5 hours. The weather was gorgeous so that the sunrise as well as the three boatrides were beautiful.

I got a ride until La Arena and from there I did a few more kilometers on my bike. Suddenly it was a completely different landscape. A road along the coast, the smell of the ocean, sun and a lot of houses and cabanas along the road. To camp wild seemed to be impossible so that I needed to stay at a campside. And to have shower actually sounded quite good. The next day I continued to Puerto Montt, the end of the Carretera Austral. The town overwhelmed me a little bit because there was too much traffic, there were too many people and it was too noisy. I bought some groceries and had lunch. Then I went to the bus station to figure out how I can get to Santiago by bus. In Germany you have many long distance busses and you can easily buy a ticket for yourself and even for you bicycle. In Chile it´s a little bit different. They might take a bike, but only MAYBE. Well they can only take the bike if there are not too many People with to much luggage on the bus. And if this is all right you still have to ask the busdriver. And of course no one would know how much it´s going to cost to take the bike on the bus. It was kind of ridiculous. So after all I still didn´t know how I will get to Santiago. Anyway I continued cycling to Puerto Varas which is already located at Lago Llanquihue. After a short visit of downtown I kept going east and found a place to pitch up my tent.

In Chaiten musste ich nun eine Entscheidung treffen. 10 Tage blieben mir noch bis ich meinen Flieger nach Costa Rica nehmen muss. Also hieß es entweder die Fähre direkt nach Pueto Montt nehmen, mit dem Rad bis nach Puerto Montt fahren oder ein Stück Richtung Norden trampen, um dann noch die Gegend bei Puerto Varas und um den Lago Llanquihue zu erkunden. Ich hatte von unterschiedlichen Leuten gehört, dass die Gegend sehr schön sein soll. Ich habe mich für die letzte Option entschieden und stand somit Samstag früh ab 6:30 Uhr an der Straße, mit der Hoffnung, dass irgendein Auto Richtung Norden fährt und mich plus Fahrrad mitnehmen kann. Auf der Straße, auf der wirklich kaum Autos unterwegs waren, war das Glück mal wieder auf meiner Seite. Um kurz nach 7 hat mich ein Truck, mit zwei Herren aus Coyhaique mitgenommen und wir haben noch die erste Fähre bekommen. Auf dem letzten Abschnitt von Chaiten nach Puerto Montt muss man insgesamt 3 Fähren nehmen, zwei kurze mit ca. einer halben Stunde Fahrzeit und eine lange mit etwa 3,5 Stunden Fahrzeit. Das Wetter war traumhaft den Tag, sodass sowohl der Sonnenaufgang auf dem Weg, als auch die drei Fährenüberfahrten wunderschön waren. Ich bin bis La Arena mit den beiden mitgefahren und habe dann noch ein paar Kilometer mit dem Rad in einer plötzlich ganz anderen Umgebung gemacht: Eine Küstenstraße, Meergeruch, Sonne und viele kleine Häuschen und Cabanas entlang der Straße. Wildcampen war dort doch schwieriger als gedacht und so blieb mir nichts anderes übrig, als auf einem Campingplatz zu übernachten. Eine Dusche konnte schließlich auch nicht schaden. Am nächsten Tag ging es weiter Richtung Puerto Montt, dem Ende des Carretera Austral. Die Stadt überforderte mich etwas, als ich dort ankam. Super viel Verkehr, viele Menschen, laut und im ersten Moment unübersichtlich. Ich kaufte ein bisschen was ein, aß mein Lunch und versuchte Informationen über meinen Bus nach Santiago zu bekommen. Wo man in Deutschland bei Fernbusgesellschaften sogar ein Ticket inkl. Fahrrad buchen kann, ist es bei den Bussen in Chile ein bisschen anders. Wenn sie denn ein Fahrrad mitnehmen, dann nur VIELLEICHT. Schließlich können sie das Rad nur mitnehmen, wenn nicht so viele Fahrgäste mit viel Gepäck mitfahren. Und dann müsste man das sowieso noch mal mit dem Busfahrer abklären. Was der ganze Spaß dann letztendlich für das Fahrrad extra kostet, wusste auch keiner so richtig. Es bleibt also spannend, wie ich MIT meinen Fahrrad nach Santiago komme. Nachdem ich all diese Informationen, die mich nicht viel weiter brachten, gesammelt hatte, bin ich wieder aufgebrochen und weiter nach Puerto Varas gefahren, was schon am Lago Llanquihue liegt. Nach einer kurzen Besichtigung der Innenstadt habe ich knapp 10km östlich des Ortes ein Plätzchen zum Zelten gefunden.
