There is no road going from El Chalten to Villa O´Higgins, the beginning (or end) of the Carretera Austral. First you need to drive on a gravel road for 37km to get to a small ferry only for persons for crossing Lago del Desierto. On the other side of the lake you need to continue by walking your bike on a hiking trail which is not ridable at all. Many people told me before that it´s possible to walk your bike and that there is a gravel road again after 7 km. So let´s do it. I´m glad that I´ve met Myriam and Gabriel (from Quebec) on my way from El Chalten to the ferry. They are also continuing going north so I could join them. The hiking trail we needed to manage was really complicated and exhausting. It was harder as I thought it would be. From time to time we were even pushing one bike with two of us up the hill on the small trail so that we didn´t need to take off all the luggage.

The gravel road which started right after the hiking trail was just a bumpy sandy road. You could ride your bike on it but you needed to be really concentrated. All in all it was a really hard day. I was glad when we arrived at the campsite just infront of the next lake.

The next day we were lucky to catch a boot to cross Lago O´Higgins from Candelario Mancilla to Villa O´Higgins. Villa O´Higgins is a cute little town which is the end of the road coming from the North, the Carretera Austral. We took a day off for enjoying the sun and started both mornings with a huch pile of pancakes (made by Myriam). I can really recommend the campground El Mosco. It is a clean, great and social place right downtown… well everything seems to be downtown in this Little town.

Von El Chalten aus gibt es keine durchgehende Straße, die nach Villa O´Higgin´s, dem Anfang (Ende) des Carretera Austral führt. Man muss zuerst ca. 37km auf einer Schotterstraße fahren, um mit einer kleinen Personenfähre über den Lago del Desierto zu kommen. Auf der anderen Seite des Sees geht es dann erstmal nur zu Fuß weiter, etwa 7km auf einem Wanderweg, der alles andere als optimal für ein Fahrrad ist. Man hört aber von vielen Leuten, dass es machbar ist, das Rad zu schieben und es danach wieder eine Schotterpiste gibt. Also auf geht´s. Auf meinem Weg von El Chalten zur Fähre habe ich Myriam und Gabriel aus Quebec kennen gelernt, die ebenfalls nach Norden unterwegs sind. Ein Glück! Der Wanderweg, den wir schiebender Weise am zweiten Tag bewältigen mussten, war komplizierter und anstrengender, als ich gehofft hatte. Wir haben zeitweise die Räder zu zweit den engen Pfad hochgeschoben, um nicht das ganze Gepäck für gewisse Abschnitte runternehmen zu müssen. Die Schotterpiste, die danach folgte war eher ein sandiger huckeliger Weg, der zwar immerhin befahrbar war aber der sehr viel Konzentration und Nerven gekostet hat. Super anstrengender Tag!

Am nächsten Tag hatten wir Glück, dass wir ein Boot von Candelario Mancilla über den Lago O´Higgins nach Villa O´Higgins bekommen haben. Villa O Higgins ist ein kleiner niedlicher Ort, eine Sackgasse am Ende der Straße, die aus dem Norden kommt, the Carretera Austral. Wir haben uns einen sonnigen Pausentag gegönnt und hatten Pancakepartys am Morgen (made by Myriam). Zu empfehlen ist Camping El Mosco, sehr gepflegter, zentraler (in dem kleinen Ort scheint alles zentral zu sein) und geselliger Ort.
